You have to be selfish for you to be self-less

Do not ignore self-care.

Self-care is a basic need we often fail to achieve because we are busy addressing other needs. But if there is one thing I have learned in life, self-care is a must whatever the situation we may be in – that’s why it is also referred to as ‘a basic need.’

Contrary to common misconception, self-care doesn’t require much time or energy.

Here are 10 ideas I strongly believe would make us embrace self-care properly and consistently:

1. If it feels wrong, don’t do it.

2. Say “exactly” what you mean.

3. Don’t be a people pleaser.

4. Trust your instincts.

5. Never speak badly about yourself.

6. Never give up on your dreams.

7. Don’t be afraid to say “no”.

8. Don’t be afraid to say “yes”.

9. Resist the need to always have control.

10. Stay away from drama and negativity – as much as possible.

See? It’s not as hard as we think it is right? But let me tell you something, it is not as easy as you think it is too.

Taking care of yourself also means letting go and giving up whatever or whoever is making you love yourself less- because for you to be selfless, you have to be selfish first.

And when you first start to draw boundaries and practices selfishness after several years of being programmed towards people-pleasing and codependency — you will be triggered to experience feelings of ‘guilt’ or ‘the villain’

Ignore it and proceed anyway.

Take care of yourself. You are the most valuable investment you will ever make.
