Dubai Liquor Licenses are now Free of Charge

From January 1, 2023, liquor licenses are now given free of charge to Dubai residents.

Yes! That is no fake news, as I have gotten mine registered at the start of the year itself.

Following the recent directives from the government of Dubai, alcohol retail stores MMI and African Eastern now offers free of charge licenses. A liquor license is required in order to purchase alcohol in Dubai which previously costs 270dhs.

How to get your free liquor license

For Dubai residents, above 21 years of age and non-Muslim, you just need to visit one of the MMI or African Eastern retail stores and present your Emirates ID. All of your details will be recorded electronically by the staff attendant which took barely 5 minutes. Once done, you can now purchase alcohol by just presenting your Emirates ID and this is valid for one full year. No more additional ID cards to put in your wallet. Registration is absolutely seamless and very efficient.

Does this apply to tourists in Dubai?

Tourists can apply for an instant 30-day alcohol license by just presenting their passports.

Removal of 30% Municipality Tax

In addition to the free of charge liquor license, the 30% municipality tax on sales of alcohol beverages are now removed as well. This evidently made the prices in Dubai retail stores very competitive against buying from other Emirates. No more long trips to Ajman, Fujairah, Ras Al Kaihmah to stock up on alcohol beverages.

An absolutely welcoming news to start 2023, but always remember to drink moderately.

Friendly reminder to don’t drink and drive.
