Why radio stations in the UAE play classical music during mourning?

As I was driving yesterday, I noticed all radio stations are playing the same classical music. So I wonder what could have happened.

When I was new in Dubai, I never really followed the news as often as I do back home. I would only get to know about major events when I turn on the radio. There were days in the past when I hear classical orchestra on all stations for several days. Yesterday was no exception, as UAE commemorates the passing of a great leader. As I listen to the music, I can’t help but feel the compassion, even as an expat, to honor the passing of one of the great leaders of this nation.

UAE commemorates the passing of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance and Industry. The sad news was shared by his brother His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, through the official Twitter account.

The UAE President has declared ten days of mourning and half-mast flags will be seen around the country. Several government offices will be closed for three days.

As a sign of honor and respect to the legacy of the departed leader, all radio stations play classical music. State-owned television stations usually do the same, and most live entertainments are also canceled.

May God bless his soul and condolences extends to the family.
