Money Hacks: Things you must know when selling your car

Living in Dubai, owning a car is one of the best luxuries any middle class earner can afford. Petrol price in Dubai is cheap compared to other parts of the world. At the same time, the price of buying a new car also costs less because of lower taxes here.

Bigger family requires a bigger car

I used to own a Subaru BRZ. It is a two-door handsome car. Now that we are having a baby, I need to have space to put a car seat and larger compartment for strollers and other baby stuffs. I am now obligated to let go of my old car and get a proper SUV family car.

Here are the top things you must know when selling your car based on my own personal experience.

Car Insurance Refund

  • All cars in the UAE requires a valid car insurance and this is under the name of the owner. When you sell your car, the previous car insurance will be cancelled and a new one needs to be purchased and registered against the new owner. Did you know that you can still get a portion refunded against the remaining duration of your car insurance after cancellation? Yes, you just need to contact your insurance provider and send them some documents as proof of transfer of ownership.

Save your Salik account balance

  • Each car is required to have a registered salik tag in order to be able to pass through salik toll gates. A salik tag is associated to a salik account which is also unique to the registered owner of a vehicle. Once you sell your car, the previous salik tag needs to be removed and invalidated. The remaining balance on your salik account however can still be saved by buying another salik tag for your new car and attaching it to the same salik account. Doing this will carry forward your old salik balance to your new salik tag. Note that you cannot simply transfer the old salik tag to a different car, hence you will need to purchase a new salik tag everytime.
