They say traveling alone can be scary – but it can also be the most liberating and life-changing experience you can have in your life – and that’s completely true. As a solo female traveller, however, you must be careful when picking places for travel. Sadly, not all places are conducive for lone female travellers.
Fortunately, Dubai is not one of those places. The crime rate in Dubai is incredibly low, and even walking alone at night is considered very safe. If you’re a solo female traveller, then Dubai is the perfect place to spread your wings and enjoy your company during a vacation.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want once you step foot in the city. Like any other traveller, there are things you have to remember to promote personal safety in Dubai.
Where to stay if you’re traveling solo
Dubai holds the distinction of being the 7th safest city in the world. However, some areas are just friendlier than others. You want to choose an accommodation within JBR Walk, Dubai Marina, or Dubai Downtown. Neighborhoods like Al Barsha and Al Safa are also great. Don’t be tempted by the low rates for Dubai Deira accommodations. This area is fun during the daytime but not welcoming once the sun goes down.
Dressing appropriately for Dubai
Dubai is part of the United Arab Emirates, which follows a distinct culture and social construct. You are a guest in this beautiful city, so you need to be respectful of their dress code – even if it isn’t strictly implemented. Ideally, you should avoid revealing outfits. When in malls, make sure you are wearing clothes that cover your shoulders and knees. There are malls that will ask you to follow this dress code. When at the beach, though, you’re perfectly welcome to wear a bikini or your favourite swimwear.
Drinking in Dubai for women
Drinking alcohol while in Dubai isn’t strictly forbidden. Alcohol is ban in public places, but you are allowed to consume alcohol when inside hotel bars or in certain club areas. Tourists can also purchase drinks in designated liquor stores and consume it at home but it comes with a certain limit. One should still be cautious as police may be less tolerant if something happens to you while intoxicated. There are hefty fines especially on drinking and driving. If you’re going to drink – make sure it’s done in a safe space like your hotel room or AirBnB. Of course, ask your host if drinking is allowed on the premises!
Best places to visit for solo female travellers in Dubai
So, you’re in Dubai and ready to explore this city yourself – where do you go? Simply walking around and taking in the city is an adventure in itself. Admire the beauty of Burj Khalifa which is just a train ride away next to Dubai Mall. It has an amazing water fountain show every night similar to Bellagio in Las Vegas. Solo female travellers are also encouraged to join a desert safari trip to complete the Dubai Experience but highly suggest to go with a reputable company to avoid disappointments on the service.
For daytime excursions, Jumeirah Beach and Dubai Deira are both great go-to places. For night-time fun, however, it’s best to stick close to your accommodation. Places like the Dubai Mall, the Dubai Garden Glow, Dubai Fountains, and Dubai Creek are all safe places to visit alone.
Remember to always be security-conscious in all your travels. Follow any of the COVID-19 protocols in place wherever you happen to be. With proper planning – you can have fun in Dubai as a solo traveller, enjoy your own company, and come back home with a new appreciation for life!
